History of HTAS: We
are proud to say on May 21, 2003, The Hammond Tech
Appreciation Society was reincorporated under a new
State Charter to operate in the State of Indiana and is
solely owned and operated by Raymond Francis Kottka.
The currently chartered officers of The Hammond Tech
Appreciation Society, Inc. are Raymond Francis Kottka
Owner and Treasurer; Chester Lobodzinski, President; and
Janet M. Kottka, Corporation Secretary. We also
would like to announce the invaluable support of Pat
Tuleja as our Social Chairman and Larry "Jughead" Hladek
as our Parade Chairman.
In the year of 1982, when the School City of Hammond
closed the doors of Hammond Technical Vocational High
School, tears of sorrow flooded many eyes. For the
14 years that followed, the "tech" name and its memories
lay forgotten in a dusty closet. One day in 1996,
Chester S. Lobodzinski - Class of 1958, founded the
Hammond Tech Appreciation Society out of his great love
and respect for all that "our school" meant to all of us
-- the exceptional teaching staff, the advanced
curricula, the friendships, and the incredible "Tech
spirit." The Hammond Tech Appreciation Society was
formed by these truly dedicated men to promote and
uphold the "Tech spirit" by guiding its first steps as
it Executive Board: Chester Lobodzinski,
President; Stan Bafia, Dave Carlson, Tom Martin and
Marvin Snorton.
Hammond
Technical Vocational High School:
1919-1982
In 1919 Hammond Tech was created in a room of the
Central School at Fayette and Hohman Streets in Downtown
Hammond. The development of the school was based
on the concept of technical vocational education,
considered both valuable and necessary education at the
close of World War I. The success and growth of
technical vocational education was immediate. In
1923 Hammond Tech was moved to 231 Russell Street, and
honored the first graduating class in 1924. The
curriculum continued to expand paralleling the increased
enrollment. To accommodate the demand for
technical vocational education, Hammond Tech was moved
to its new and final home at 5727 Sohl Avenue in
1950. By the end of the 1951 school year,
enrollment had reached nearly 1300. Throughout a sixty
three year history, Hammond Tech prepared students for
immediate entry into the skilled work force or continued
academic pursuits in universities throughout the
nation. During this time, Hammond Tech ranked
first in attendance among technical vocational high
schools nationally. Sound and caring leadership
of the faculty and staff inspired self-confidence and
"Tech Tiger" pride in the thousands of
students that graced the hallowed halls.
